Why do atheists have to be such a-holes? It is a time for people to be happy. No one knows for sure that it was based on paganism. Is it possible he was really born in December? Yes. Is it possible that they decided to create Christmas in December to blunt those pagan festivities? Yes.
Is it possible there is no God? Yes. So go in peace…

I believe there is one. Bill Mahar doesn't, but his movie Religulous was a disappointment. I was actually hoping there would have been a good debate. Instead he put rednecks and other people on who were ill prepared on the subject. Hey, I'm all for making rednecks look stupid, but if you're going to debate Christmas or religion why not get smart people to debate both sides? There could have been some insight or giving viewers more info to make their mind's up.
So anyway,

Oh, let’s can the nonsense. Christmas is a holiday that a long time ago had some Christian symbology to it, but pretty much doesn’t any more and certainly hasn’t in my lifetime. Sure, it’s a portmanteau of pagan traditions and celebrations from a scattering of cultures, but who cares? It is what it is and pretty much has been since the Victorian era.

Anyway, concerning the films: well done Episode for bringing us some rather unusual movies from the very first days of film. Not everything has to be “ShootThemInTheFace (Shoot Facier) 6″. Hurrah!

Actually, Christmas was the church’s attempt that creating a holiday to overshadow the pagan celebration of the equinox. Jesus Christ was said, rather, to be born in late January or early February.

Santa Claus comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, which was a derivation from Sint-Nicolaas the Saint of Children. He traveled around putting gifts in the shoes of children. The shoes were left outside to dry at night.

I openly celebrate Christmas, despite being an atheist, because I like the joy on a kid’s face when you give them a new toy. I go around my town and give these toys (cheap plastic things) to all the kids who come up and sing me a song (remnant of the Sinterklaas thing). The town is small enough that I can do that without it being weird.
