3 Festival Releases from ARTHOUSE

Unknown group ARTHOUSE, is I believe new to the scene. With only 10 releases in database they give us here 3 great foreign films. All contain English subs hardcoded.
They claim they will be releasing FESTIVAL movies mainly.

From NFO:
ARTHOUSE is defined: An art film (also called an art cinema,  art movie, or in the US, an “independent film” or oart house film) is a typically serious, noncommercial, independently made film that is aimed at a niche audience, rather than a mass audience. Thats what we are, thats what we gonna do. The movies we re gonna release are not STV,but FESTIVAL movies, movies that rock the world and push the cinema art to the future.

Thieves Also known as: Ladrones
OK – So “Thieves” if you get a chance to see it then you really, really must. I do not have the necessary film critic vocabularly to describe the impact of the film’s gritty theme of petty theft and its links to darker underworlds and the moody and daringly close shots of simply stunning young actors in clinically modern City environments. There are twists and turns in the plot that provoke deep unease, surreal moments linked to a mannequin and music that is engaging and as integral and layered as the characters. Some of the images and metaphors will remain in my mind’s eye forever. For a foreign subtitled film with little dialogue – it is truly engrossing and yet gently provocative.

In Memory of Myself Also known as: In memoria di me
Andrea is an intelligent, handsome young man who seems to have everything necessary to succeed. But the worlds infinite possibilities have only confused him. In this disoriented state, he undertakes the novitiate, a period of spiritual training leading to priesthood. Within the large religious community of novices, Father Superiors and retired priests, Andrea discovers more than a simple world of semi-silence and prayer. The monastery becomes a mysterious universe where every look, every sound, reveals intrigue as the novices are encouraged to denounce one anothers shortcomings. Daily routines, rituals and readings are marked by constant surveillance and questioning, as the novices struggle to lose themselves on behalf of God.

Andreas attention turns to the nervous Fausto, obviously tormented and not a strong public speaker. Andrea is also shaken by his encounters with zealous novice Zanna, who rebelliously accuses the novitiate and the Church itself of using Gods Word to gain power and influence. In comparison, Andrea begins to profoundly feel he is merely feigning faith.

Despite strong support from the Father Superior, Andrea flounders on his mystical test of absolute faith. As his frustration for solid answers grows, he risks to abandon the Order like others before him.

Waiter Also known as: Ober
An oddity in the Dutch film landscape — were deadpan, subtleness and, in Ober’s case, narrative acrobatics are not exactly part and parcel of home-grown comedies — Van Warmerdam has nevertheless gathered a loyal following who will be delighted to see the director is up to his usual tricks after his coolly received 2003 outing Grimm.

The king of Dutch deadpan Alex van Warmerdam strikes again with the delightfully off-kilter Ober (Waiter), in which a fictional waiter (played with evident glee by the director himself) goes to complain about his miserable existence to his creator. Twenty years after his now-classic debut Abel, Van Warmerdam here proves that his unique combination of deadpan humour and quintessentially Dutch settings are still a winning team — though one that could only be coached by the director himself. After the oddity that was Grimm the actor-director is back in top form and his cult following at home and abroad might grow further if Ober is marketed well. Surface similarities to the work of Charlie Kaufman and Aki Kaurismäki should convince unfamiliar viewers to give Ober a try and they won’t be disappointed.

Ober was such an absurd movie. Haha, it was really something else. I enjoyed it good.

I believe this was the festival film of the dutch film festival of 2006.

The idea of a group dedicated to releasing arthouse/festival movies is a great one…

    BUT…..

    …why the hardcoded subs…???..

vobsub or even .srt would be much better.

….its unlikley that anyone from ARTHOUSE will read this but hey, if hrd subs are already encoded in the dvd then ok, but otherwise avoid them like the plague…

Bringing an unexpected lyricism to a subject more accustomed to in-your-face treatment, Jaime Marques Olarreaga’s “Thieves” unfolds the details of its artful young dodger’s troubled mind with craft and flair, but only intermittently grips the emotions. Built around a compelling perf from Spanish cinema’s teen fave, Juan Jose Ballesta, pic cannily fuses the poetry of picking pockets with an ambiguous, slowly played-out love affair. Result could just about steal into Spain-friendly offshore arthouses, with fest play guaranteed.http://rapidshare.com/files/68449551/thvs-ARTHOUSE.part1.rar
