2008 Beijing Olympic Closing Ceremonies

UPDATE: Beijing.Olympics.2008.Closing.Ceremony.720p.HDTV.x264-ORENJi just pre’d

Well it’s finally over. After 17 days of an amazing journey into Beijing, China we say goodbye to another year’s Olympics. Next time, 2012 in London. See you there?! (Yes, Yes Vancouver in 2010 but that’s Winter and I’m already there :D )

Brought to you in 2 CD format with very good quality by group 2HD. A great show, an amazing way to end this years Olympics. The fireworks were AMAZING … and they weren’t all computer generated this time :lol:

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, was a major international multi-sport event that took place in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, from August 8 (except football, which started on August 6) to August 24, 2008. A total of 10,500 athletes competed in 302 events in 28 sports, one event more than was on the schedule of the 2004 games.

    a few of our Olympic caps were problems inheritant with the NBC feed and we’re

    not problems with our caps. If you’d rather not have the events, just say so

    and next time we won’t waste our time or energy capping them when really, as a

    If you were to have a look @ it from a population point of you, Australia had the most medals per capita…..

    And, yes, it has ALWAYS been the accepted standard to base the tally on the number of gold medals

  27. Jake

    lolol at the medal count being arranged at total medals

    dw, everyone knows china dominated these olympics and were the superior country

  28. Anon
    August 25th, 2008 | 07:47

    @11
    The judges weren’t really bias, Olympics judges don’t just come from China.

    The Chinese “may” have used underage gymnasts, however there has been no solid proof as of yet. Yes they may have looked a little too young, however my Chinese hairdresser is like 45 but she looks like shes 30.

    Even if they were underage, i really don’t see the problem with that. I only see the underage part as being a “handicap” on china’s side. Lets say those girls are 13yrs old, they have only had 13 yrs or less to practice their sport. Where as the girls from USA are a lot older, they have had so many more years to perfect their form. Therefore in the end the Americans just cannot stand that they lost to kids who have had less training than they have.

    Pretty sad that the Americans cannot accept the loss, even after China giving them a handicap.

  29. fink
    August 25th, 2008 | 07:52

    Can someone toss me a video or links or news paper articles or anything that gives an example of how the Americans cant handle not being the best?

    Am I missing it here?, Apparently arranging the medals to most medals and not most gold medals means Americans can not handle not being the best?

  30. AlphA
    August 25th, 2008 | 07:53

    America didn’t win…It just doesn’t work like that people.

    China won 51 gold medals whereas the United States won only 36 gold medals.

    Now honestly 2 Bronze medals don’t even come close to a Gold meaning your NUMBER 1 in the WORLD at that sport.

    I’m an Australian and I think China kicked ASS!! Well done China, this was an awesome Olympic games! Opening and closing where awesome and no major dramas at all.

    If USA wants to think they won then good on them! I see no Winners or losers. It was a great two weeks of sport!

    Go Bolt! 9.69 second 100M was AWESOME

    August 25th, 2008 | 08:03

    Where exactly is everyone seeing this arranging by total and not gold at?
    US news? perhaps a US news website? a US paper? I do find it strange that US news, US websites and US papers are arranging the medals by total, since the US has the most medals and all, I’d imagine Chinese news, websites and papers are arranging them by gold since they have the most golds and all

  39. john
    August 25th, 2008 | 08:22

    I don’t know why everyone is always so eager to have a go at America, and always taking satisfaction from the thought of China beating them. Yes they abuse their power sometimes, that’s what powerful nations do, but if you think rooting for the day China is more powerful than America makes sense then you’re in for a rude awakening. They won’t have any compunctions about misusing their power, ffs even now everyone can see the implicit threats they make, watch all the western leaders kowtowing to them in a way they would never be forced to by America. Seriously, better the devil you know.

  40. American

  41. wipava_454
    August 25th, 2008 | 08:23

    the usa can’t take it that they didnt win, hence the re-arrangement of the medal tally. its always been like that with them, just look at the war in iraq, its all about being the biggest superpower and trying to rule over other smaller countries, weapons of mass destruction my ass…

    and phelps? pfft who cares, i have a lot of respect that he won 6 individual and 2 team gold medals, but usain bolt is the real talk of the olympics, to take the double on the track is far more prestigious, and i know id rather be able to run fast then swim fast.

  42. oly
    August 25th, 2008 | 08:25

    LOL at the yanks, the only country in the world to suddenly rearrange the table by total medals and not Gold. God they are such sore losers. They cant even handle coming second. As previously mentioned, if you divide the gold medals by population per capita, Australia won… not that it changes the medal table, its just an interesting fact that a country with so few people can do so well.

    The table has never been ranked by total, so don’t sit there and kid yourself into thinking its normal.

    Well done to China, they seriously kicked ass this year.

    This is really pathetic what US media does in here… :)
    so total medal doesn’t count?
    maybe it would but not like this for sure… :)
    because gold and silver medal doesnt value same…!
    but i guess you can count like this though;
    1 Gold = 3 Silver
    1 Silver = 3 Bronze
    So China = 550 bronze worth of medals
    USA = 474 bronze worth of medals

    This would be fair maybe… China still wins on total too BTW… :)
    (I’m from a totally different country)

  47. Typical

  48. lol
    August 25th, 2008 | 08:35

    lol @ America rearranging the list. It’s always been the total of gold, not the total of medals.

    @14, now do the division by gold and not total, Jamaica would be the only ones close to Australia. It’s not surprising, Australia is the worlds sporting nation and we did poorly this time compared to previous. If only we had the fraction of the funding that others have.

    I love how the entire planet bar the USA ranks it by Golds as opposed to total medals won.

    Yes the Chinese benefitted from some dodgy officiating and possibly underage gymnasts, but as hosts they were always going to get the hometown advantage. Hopefully us Brits will have the same ‘luck’ in 2012 and we could make the top 3!

    You know, it’s unreal at the ignorant assumptions some Americans seem to make time and again.

    As if trying to rig the Olympics so that their population would not be disadvantaged for network broadcast times – and to hell with the rest of the world if it means America got their transmissions of their Olympic events in prime time – now it seems they have to rig the medal table to make it look like they won the Olympics?

    Does America’s hypocrisy – and the ignorance of the patriotic, chest thumping ignoramuses who reside therein know any limits at all?

    China won – and all the unconvincing Yank fervor will do not one thing to change that.

    @LexInEffect comment 62 ….

    How un-American and unexpected … drowning a succint, specific Olympic Games and topic with the grandeur of overall achievement.
    Overall gold medal totals are not part off this discussion or topic.
    Where did you get the extra 78 golds? Why not make it a neat 100? Or even 1000?

    Think about the real achievers in countries that have fractions off the population and budget of America … oh wait, I’m actually asking you to think outside of America – a completely foreign concept for you, and one that seems beyond your ability to embrace.

    It’s a WORLD games .. understand that? And sorry to burst your bubble LexInEffect, but America is NOT the world, and certainly does not speak for or show itself up as the model for this world to follow.

  63. QuadrupelQ
    August 25th, 2008 | 09:03

    US won, just like they did in Iraq.

    Oops… :-P

    But seriously, the list IS generally based on the amount of gold medals. This means China came out first, which is no surprise since they were the organizing country and are just damn good!

    It’s about the gold, not the silver or bronze.

    Where are you all getting this total count arrangement from…any ways my two cents are that US have been 1st in total count for awhile since 1996 but just this year they did not have as many gold medals to show…
    2008 – 110 total(36 gold)
    2004 – 103 total (35 gold)
    2000 – 97 total (40 gold)
    1996 – 101 total (44 gold)

    …so before that it was between russia (U.S.S.R) and US for first place…..

    I have always liked the US and Americans, but that Medal tally with 36 USA golds beating 51 Chinese just only tells the rest of the world that Americans will tell any lie come out on top. Gold does not equal silver and it certainly doesn’t equal bronze.

    The IOC knows who won, so does the rest of the world. Tell yourselves what you want, you just look ungratious in defeat, and take the shine off some truly amazing sporting achievments.

    ….further research has shown that total medal counts determine winner…..every Olympics except 2008, 1912 and 1896 Olympics where the country won by most medals but not most gold….all other years the winning country has most gold and overall total….

    ….check out the 1912 Olympics….US has the most gold but they were ranked second because of the total medal count….

    Wrong medal count! China should be on top

    China was the host. China also won the most gold medals. Coincidence?

    August 25th, 2008 | 09:23

    @ 50

    Or you can count like this:

    1 Gold = 3 Bronze
    1 Silver = 2 Bronze
    1 Bronze = 1 Bronze

    So, US’s bronze medals 220, China’s bronze medals 223… And… China still wins on total too BTW :D !

    @sweetchuk

    What part of my comment made you believe that thinking out side of the US is “a completely foreign concept for you, and one that seems beyond your ability to embrace.” Just because I stick up for my country? I’m sick of everyone always hating on the Americans! The athletes who competed didn’t publish the tally you’re all refering to…they’re not invading foreign countries… whatever everyone’s beef is with the US, these athletes have nothing to do with it. And if you read a few more posts you would have seen that the 78 additional medals are from Winter Olympics…

    And for your information I was born in Latvia and spent more than half my life living all across the world and I have friends and family all over the world. So I am perfectly capable of thinking “outside the US”… I have friends and family all over the world.

    So next time don’t assume, it makes you look foolish.

    @Tom – comment 77

    So do I Tom … then the world might actually get a chance to shrug itself of the IOU factor that America and champions of that country’s ‘benevolence’ seem to regurgitate to all us ‘lesser’countries.

    So it goes back to being isolationist … same as it was before pretty much the end of WW1, before 1/3rd into WWII, and how would the world be a worse off place because of that?

    And how did this discussion turn from America trying to fudge the figures on actual gold medals won in this Olympics and its place on the medal tally as a result, to the erroneous assumption that America thinks it is the international economic and military shining light for the rest of the world, which is most certainly is not!

    Tom@77 There are an awful lot of us non-Americans, who are not anti-American who are hoping for the day when America will withdraw all troops and let the rest of us get on and live as soverign nations without having to first considder what we do in the light of what “the Americans” might think. There is a time to interveine and there is a time to step back and let things happen, and it seems the US rarely gets it right.

    The US is powerful and certainly is one of the most generous nations on earth, but power and generosity are not an excuse for arrogance and an ignorant refusal to listen to other points of view.

    What troops. Only troops you got are those protecting oil. I don’t see any US troops protecting any country. The fact you are warmongering country occupying others and taking their resources doesn’t make you world protectors.
    The only country that needed protection from you was Gergia, and we can see how well you protected them!

    While you’re at it, throw in Burma, whose plight has long been ignored by the almighty, all conquering United States, because of the lack of oil there to fuel its militaristic and national ambitions.

    Meanwhile, the democratic principles America so eloquently recites us walks silently past the incredible suffering of the Burmese under a very Saddam-like rule of the junta.

    World protectors my foot. Not if it doesn’t suit them.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics_medal_table
    Therefore, the total number of bronze medals is greater than the total number of gold or silver medals.
    So if the US would have won all the bronze medals and no silver or gold, you still would think they are the best, because they have the most medals?
    Third place is always the best, you clearly remember the third man walking on the moon, you know, Charles something!

    If you all hate America so much you should boycott us, and you can start by taking those American Intel and AMD CPUs out of your computers so we don’t have to listen to you anymore…

    To comment no. 98.

    Do you really think that European or other highly advanced nations couldn’t make CPU’s or any other PC component for that mattter?
    Do you think that if America was removed from the equation, other more likely beneficial technologies wouldn’t develop and flourish?

    Don’t delude yourself into thinking America is the be all and end all, because it really isn’t.

    If you think that, I’ve got a nice bridge in the middle of the Sahara desert to sell you.

    123456@93 Intel and AMD both manufacture their CPUs in Mainland China and Taiwan, so it looks like China wins again

    August 25th, 2008 | 09:53

    @123456

    A nice break? America relies on international sales of those CPU’s, amongst other international trade, to try to prop up its sagging and nearly stuffed economy as it is.
    Removal of those sales would be about as helpful to America as its doomed to fail attempts at trying to claim these Olympics as a win!

    But maybe it might be fun to see America start from the beginning again. It might learn the lessons of humility and honesty in dealings, rather than recite them to a world already by and large practicing them.

    @46 and @54

    All these Aussies bashing the Americans yet coming out with their own per capita table which is wrong anyway as Australia isn’t on top either!

    Then they complain about the lack of funding, yet Australia spends far more money on the olympics than most other countries! So on a per dollar basis, Australia does very poorly when compared to the Eastern Europeans, like Russia, Slovenia etc. along with Cuba, the African countries etc.
