I heard that America invented a new style of medal table which features the total medals each country has got in the olympic history,so it will make sure that America can stay on top of it for a really long long time before they invent something more interesting.
also found an intereting suggestion that we should have a point based system for the medal table,e.g. gold gets 3 points,silver gets 2 and bronze get 1.

The judges weren’t really bias, Olympics judges don’t just come from China.
The Chinese “may” have used underage gymnasts, however there has been no solid proof as of yet. Yes they may have looked a little too young, however my Chinese hairdresser is like 45 but she looks like shes 30.
Even if they were underage, i really don’t see the problem with that. I only see the underage part as being a “handicap” on china’s side. Lets say those girls are 13yrs old, they have only had 13 yrs or less to practice their sport. Where as the girls from USA are a lot older, they have had so many more years to perfect their form. Therefore in the end the Americans just cannot stand that they lost to kids who have had less training than they have.
Pretty sad that the Americans cannot accept the loss, even after China giving them a handicap.

Where are you all getting this total count arrangement from…any ways my two cents are that US have been 1st in total count for awhile since 1996 but just this year they did not have as many gold medals to show…
2008 – 110 total(36 gold)
2004 – 103 total (35 gold)
2000 – 97 total (40 gold)
1996 – 101 total (44 gold)
…so before that it was between russia (U.S.S.R) and US for first place…..

I have always liked the US and Americans, but that Medal tally with 36 USA golds beating 51 Chinese just only tells the rest of the world that Americans will tell any lie come out on top. Gold does not equal silver and it certainly doesn’t equal bronze.

A nice break? America relies on international sales of those CPU’s, amongst other international trade, to try to prop up its sagging and nearly stuffed economy as it is.
Removal of those sales would be about as helpful to America as its doomed to fail attempts at trying to claim these Olympics as a win!
But maybe it might be fun to see America start from the beginning again. It might learn the lessons of humility and honesty in dealings, rather than recite them to a world already by and large practicing them.

Just because people point out that according to Gold medal count China came first and the U.S second doesn’t mean they hate the U.S. It means they disagree with the claim that the U.S. won the Olympics.
On a side note, Australians are a nation of some 20 Million on the worlds biggest island and that makes us somewhat insecure about our place in the world. That’s why we were disappointed in our performance at the games and there’s no real need to be. All countries did well to be able to compete on a world stage and we should all be proud of that.

Driving a sort of anti-Americanism throughout this post. Oh yes, I wish either Obama or McCain would have the balls to turn the country into an isolationist. It is simplistic to think that winning a gold medal is the purpose of the Olympics. What if a country sweeps an event, which Jamaica and US and A did several times. Should you punish the silver and bronze medalists? I think not! Anyone who won a medal is a winner.

That means while sure, bronzes and silvers are to be commended, China WON more events. How many people “almost won” is completely irrelevant. You don’t win a tournament in something like motor racing by coming second and third a lot, you have to win.

The chart is posted as just the “MEDAL COUNT” not who is first, second or third. Clearly the USA is first in the total of medals but China won more gold which puts them in first place just like any other competition. I have saw the overall medal count just like this since the 1984 Olympics. They show both usually, overall medal count and order by place.

You people do understand that the Olympics are a big meaningless joke right?
The fact that most of the sports aren’t actually sports should have tipped you off really.
That’s what makes China’s determination to show the world that they are supposedly awesome so down-right pathetic. They don’t even understand that most people don’t watch and don’t care about the Olympics.
I am a Chinese American – my parents were born in America, but all grandparents were born in China. The USA is not what it used to be, and a lot of countries have surpassed the USA in both educational and moral standards in the last 20 or so years.
The same goes for the sports – clearly the World has caught up and surpassed the USA in many areas. In the USA, most people don’t care if we are not on top of _all_ sports – only the ones that they feel are important to the masses – like basketball are really important to most.
So I think that we Americans are fine with the World being dominant in the majority of sports – just as long as we win at least a couple of “popular” sports.
However one ratio test that we _may_ lead in: how many people want to immigrate to our country vs. how many people want to leae our country.
Please feel free to suggest your country as an alternative.
I certainly have become less proud of our policies in the last 10 years or so, but I still would not want to live anywhere else. I’m sure a lot of people feel the same about their countries, too.
So let’s just agree to disagree for now…

Just to set the record straight for anyone who actually cares about the truth, if you google 2004 Olympics you will see that all the medal counts are arranged by total medals. Of the 6 sites I looked at ALL were arranged by total medals.

I’m U.S citizen but I’m embarrassed by this list. Anyone who accepts USA as 1st is either arrogant or stupid. By making this list, the author is basically saying that American are stupid and will accept anything fed to them. This pissed me off greatly.
Silver and bronze do not equal gold. If they are, wtf is the point of having 2nd and 3rd place. Total counts says 2nd and 3rd is the same as first. WTF. LOL.
If you want fair then give each type of medals their numerical worth. Example: G=3, S=2, B=1. U.S still doesn’t get 1st place.
If you just want to know who’s the greatest, then count the gold. You just don’t freaking get 1st place coming in 2nds and 3rds.

Oh and why would everyone be getting up tight about underage commpetitors? The olympics is spose to be the best of the best, age doesnt really count. If you lose to someone because their better you can’t cry that their too young can you? lol The underage rule is there so that children don’t get put under to much pressure. As for the Medal counts, yes China kicked some major Butt. Their national anthem was played the most on top of the podium’s. However, their Olympian’s are STATE funded. If you have any inclination of being an athlete the Country puts you into a paid program. Where as here in the US we actually have to pay quite a lot of money to raise an Olympian. Just ask the gymnasts or Michael Phelps. But enough ranting. Go OBAMA!
