The recent days seem to be lazier than one can imagine. I had to go through my archive to find some decent movie to watch, because there wasn’t anything too good to watch. If you like alternative production, you can consider a new dvdrip of Little Red Flowers (Kan shang qu hen mei) though. This is a Chinese movie made in Italian coproduction, which won some film festival prizes, but the Cantonese language will be a big issue for its bigger popularity. English subs for this comedian drama are included within the release. I can’t really tell you if it’s any good, may be some reader from the area will know more.

Qiang is a four-year-old little rebel, possessed of a pair of luminous eyes and a precociously indomitable will. His father deposits him at a well-appointed residential kindergarten in post-1949 Beijing, since his parents are often away. Life at the kindergarten appears rich and colourful, made up of a variety of cheerfully sunny rituals and games meant to train these children to be good members of society. But it’s not so easy for Qiang to adapt to this kind of carefully organized, minutely scrutinized collective life. A fierce individualist in miniature, he tries but fails to conform to the model his teachers enforce. Yet he still craves the reward that the other students win: the little red flowers awarded each day as tokens for good behaviour.

But Qiang doesn’t win any flowers: he can’t yet dress himself, and doesn’t play together with the other kids. He even dares to talk back to the strict Teacher Li and Principal Kong when they try to impose some discipline on him. Gradually, his charisma and bravado start to win over his classmates: their stealthy little rebellions gain steam when he succeeds in convincing everyone that Teacher Li is a child-eating monster in disguise. When their attempt to capture her is thwarted, Qiang’s resistance develops a more disturbing dimension, and he is forcibly ostracized from his companions. Will he succumb to the adult-enforced conformity around him, or will he insist on growing up his own way, by his own rules?

Guys from LRC bring us a nice dvd screener of a British limited thriller Civic Duty. The movie looks very good, but it will raise a lot of questions probably, as it plays with terrorists, 9/11 and similar topics. It was preimered at Tribeca Film Festival last summer but the official DVD release date is still ahead of us. The quality of this dvdscr is nice, but not brilliant – there is blurred watermark at bottom and the picture isn’t also completely clear, but it’s definitely watchable.

Angry and depressed over losing his job, accountant Terry Allen begins to suspect his new neighbor, a single Islamic grad student with a penchant for unexplained late night activities, is at the center of a terrorist conspiracy. A 27-year-old man described as one of the world’s most prolific spammers was arrested Wednesday, and federal authorities said computer users across the Web could notice a decrease in the amount of junk e-mail. Robert Alan Soloway is accused of using networks of compromised “zombie” computers to send out millions upon millions of spam e-mails.”He’s one of the top 10 spammers in the world,” said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of the company’s Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. “He’s a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day.” He has been living in a ritzy apartment and drives an expensive Mercedes convertible, said prosecutor Kathryn Warma. Prosecutors are seeking to have him forfeit $773,000 they say he made from his business, Newport Internet Marketing Corp.

A federal grand jury last week returned a 35-count indictment against Soloway charging him with mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering. Prosecutors say Soloway used computers infected with malicious code to send out millions of junk e-mails since 2003. The computers are called “zombies” because owners typically have no idea their machines have been infected. He continued his activities even after Microsoft won a $7 million civil judgment against him in 2005 and the operator of a small Internet service provider in Oklahoma won a $10 million judgment, prosecutors said. Apple Inc.’s iTunes Store started selling songs without digital-rights management, or DRM, technology — copy-protection software that limits where songs can be played. The unrestricted content means some songs will work on players other than the iPod. The DRM-free tracks cost $1.29 each, 30 cents more than the usual price of songs at iTunes. Separately, Apple today said it created an area on iTunes to offer free course lectures, language lessons and sports highlights from universities including Stanford and Duke. Apple expects more than half of the 5 million songs on iTunes to be offered in the DRM-free format by the end of the year, Jobs said today. EMI’s DRM-free catalog numbers in the “hundreds of thousands” of songs, the company said. The DRM-free songs are twice as large as the copy-protected version and may take twice as long to download depending on the speed of customers’ Internet connections, Cue said.

The another news about Apple is its new video deal with Google’s YouTube. Apple agreed to carry clips from Google Inc.’s YouTube starting in June, using the world’s most popular online video service to attract customers for its two-month-old digital-television box. The feature works with Apple TV, a $299 device that transmits movies and shows over a wireless connection to widescreen sets, the Cupertino, Calif. -based company said yesterday in a statement. Apple also introduced a higher-capacity model of the box. Chief executive Steve Jobs began selling Apple TV in March, challenging Microsoft Corp. and cable companies such as Comcast in delivering movies and TV shows to viewers . Here comes a new show, one which is yet another Interactive reality game show. The series premiered May 30, 2007 on ABC. In each episode, a panel of popular well-known judges — comedians Jeffrey Ross (Comedy Central Roasts, The Aristocrats), Lisa Ann Walter (War of the Worlds, Shall We Dance?) and Elon Gold (Stacked, Cheaper by the Dozen) — will use their razor sharp wit and comedic skills as they evaluate, critique and sometimes skewer celebrity impersonators based on how much they look, sound and act like the celebrity they’re impersonating.
