Hacker in US nuclear energy department

computer_hacker_1066.jpgPeople on such important places like the department of nucler energy in the USA should care a bit more about their security – A hacker stole a file containing the names and Social Security numbers of 1,500 people working for the Department of Energy’s nuclear weapons agency. The data theft occurred in a computer system at an Albuquerque service center belonging to the National Nuclear Security Administration. The incident happened last September, but senior officials were informed only three days ago.

Linton Brooks, an administrator at the agency, said during a House hearing that he learned of the security breach late in September, but did not inform Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman about it. It had occurred earlier that month. Brooks blamed a misunderstanding for not informing either Bodman or Clay Sell, the deputy energy secretary. File contained names, Social Security numbers, birth dates , a code indicating where the employees worked, and codes showing their security clearances. Do you know where are floating details about you? Just putting your own name into Google may bring some surprising results…

Another busts on the US scene

The reports of new scene busts are happening more and more often. These more interested of you may clearly remember wave of scene busts and raids, the biggest of them from the beginning of last summer. And now it’s here again: FBI agents raided two datacentres with some huge sites hosted there and took down over 20 boxes. The affected hostings are Layered Tech and Servermatrix, both located in Texas, US. Owners of these hostings also provided FBI names and address of server owners so it may have serious consequences too.

The affected release groups include such a big names as FLAMES, DiAMOND, SAGA and HAFVCD (all movie groups) or F4GC and TBE (0day appz). Some of their presites were completely shutted down while others get offline due to recent events. There are also reports about one topsite with 24TB of space being confiscated in Servermatrix datacentre. The reason of these busts is quite simple – the insecurity of such servers hosted as normal colocation servers. Everyone can start such a server and it’s not hard for the network operators to find out there’s some site with enormous traffic and huge portion of warez, and then report it to MPAA/FBI. Security should be always on the first place…

iPods more popular than beer… WTF :)

The world is getting crazy. There’s some new research made by Ridgewood company between undergraduate students in the USA which showed that you are more “in” if you have iPod than if you go to pub with friends.

Nearly three quarters, or 73 percent, of 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were “in” – more than any other item in a list that also included text messaging, bar hopping and downloading music. In the year-ago study, only 59 percent of students named the iPod as “in,” putting the gadget well below alcohol-related activities. This year, drinking beer and Facebook.com, a social networking Web site, were tied for second most popular, with 71 percent of the students identifying them as being “in.”

Though beer might soon regain its No. 1 spot, as it quickly did with the Internet a decade ago, the iPod’s popularity is still “a remarkable sign,” Weil said. “For those who believe there’s an excessive amount of drinking on campus, now there’s something else that’s common on campuses.” I’m saying what’s wrong with this world, or at least, with american one? I don’t know anything better than going to some party with your friends, dancing with hot chicks, chit-chatting about nothing and of course, drinking a beer. May be the America is a bit different, but I really don’t see this trend in my country and I hope it will never be like this, admiring someone just because he has the iPod…
