Microsoft is starting the offensive. Microsoft said Monday that it was committing fully to Windows Live, with 20 new services currently in various stages of testing. Windows Live Messenger is the first global product from the lineup to come out of beta, and the company says others would soon follow. The instant messaging client was selected as the first to exit beta because of its importance in tying other Live services together. You can already download it at this page. Microsoft is feeling the heat from small, niche players offering software as a service, as well as from larger competitors. For example, its nemesis Google. has a growing menu of hosted software for consumers and businesses which includes spreadsheet, word processing, photo sharing, Web analytics, and mapping applications.

“In many ways Windows Live Messenger is one of the main hubs of Windows Live,” Windows Live and MSN corporate vice president Martin Taylor said. “Windows Live Messenger also is the first core service that incorporates the sleek user interface and look-and-feel that will be used across all of the Windows Live services.” The company also plans to open up the Windows Live platform eventually to allow advertisers, developers and businesses to build their services on top of Windows Live. An SDK is currently in beta testing. This will probably mean another portion of these annoying flashing banners in your IM client. However I’m pretty sure there will be some special tool / fix to remove these ads as it was with previous versions of the majority of clients for instant messaging. Microsoft has a quite hard position at the moment, because the market and users are used to “standards” like AOL, MSN or ICQ and new IM client will have to fight hard to gain some decent position…

There’s another hot release floating on the internet - a dvd screener of funny Ice Age 2. Release group DanK published this version just few hours ago, but there are already some echos about not dvd source, so it will be nuked probably. The quality is quite fine though, the best you can get so far. I was previously writing about The Meltdown which quite disappointed me, but it’s still better than average movie, so get it if you want to have some fun…

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia is no longer as freewheeling as it once was, protecting some subjects from sometimes contentious editing. The New York Times reports that at the moment 82 articles are barred from any editing while another 179 are “semi-protected,” with only people who have been registered members of the community for at least four days allowed to touch them. Albert Einstein, Christine Aguilera and China fall into the first, totally protected category, while U.S. President George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler only rate semi-protection.

Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s founder, said he does not think the protection significantly detracts from its openness, pointing out that the vast majority of all sites are open for editing. While anyone on earth with Internet access could, in theory, edit or write a Wikipedia entry, Wales said most of the work is done by a core group of about 1,000 volunteers. Wikipedia is still getting bigger and bigger, is now the web’s third most popular news and information source and contains almost 4 million entries. There’s a new movie starring the laziest and probably also the most popular tomcat of the world - Garfield. The first movie with this animal hero was released about one year ago and wasn’t much good - this one doesn’t look much better but it may be still a bit funny to watch it. The quality of this first cam is pretty good - you can check the samples attached at the bottom. The picture is very clear and without pixelization or dark corners.
