Warner Bros goes to BitTorrent

Interesting news… It looks some headmaster finally recognized the power of peer to peer applications. Warner Brothers is to become the first Hollywood studio to provide movies on BitTorrent, the popular peer-to-peer platform. From this summer, BitTorrent users will be able to buy Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Corpse Bride and North Country. Older films such as Natural Born Killers, The Matrix or Dog Day Afternoon will also be available. Warner Brothers’ offerings on BitTorrent will be loaded with special digital rights management software, locking the files from being distributed illegally. That means that while BitTorrent will take advantage of users’ bandwidth to redistribute the bits and pieces of the movie files to other paying customers, it will be impossible for users to share files with their friends, unless those friends pay up.

“We have to create a legitimate service that meets consumer expectations or else they’re going to get it elsewhere. BitTorrent has made the leap in creating a legal partnership that respects the value of the intellectual property. This has provided us with a next-generation platform for the distribution of our films and TV programs.”

said Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Brothers. “BitTorrent has shown us that they have very good filtering technology. But nothing’s perfect, and we know that.” Good decision guys. Should I make you some special upload account? I’m sure this protection will be cracked anyway as CSS and many others, so it’s your chance :)

Samsung develops slimmest mobile phone

samsung.jpgSouth Korea’s Samsung Electronics said on Monday it had developed the world’s slimmest mobile phone. The SGH-X820 model is 6.9 millimeters thick and carries a built-in two-megapixel camera while functioning as an MP3 player as well, Samsung Electronics said. The bar-type model will be showcased at an information and technology communications fair this week in Russia, called Sviaz Expocomm 2006, it said.

“The Samsung ‘ultra-slim phone’ has set a record in the mobile handset history by breaking the wall of 7-millimeter thickness for the first time in the world,” the company said. The handsets are scheduled to hit the shelves in Europe this month and in China in June, but pricing details have not been disclosed. Samsung has been slimming down its handsets after its US rival Motorola’s success in marketing its Razr models. Damn, time to upgrade my Motorola MPx220 is coming…

Eight brave sled dogs search for the master who is looking for a way to rescue them in this adventure drama. An American geologist (Bruce Greenwood) flies to Antarctica to participate in a project at the United States Research Base, where he teams up with arctic guide Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) and his best friend, Cooper (Jason Biggs). The scientist soon discovers that Shepard also has eight other valuable friends — a pack of sled dogs he’s worked with for years, who have rescued him from a number of tight spots. As the three men explore a frozen mountain region, an unexpected accident coupled with a massive storm front forces them to fly to safety, leaving the dogs behind. Shepard is determined to rescue his canine friends, but he has to wait until the weather will allow him to travel back to the mountain, while the dogs struggle against the elements to survive as they attempt to make their way back home. Eight Below was inspired by a true story involving Japanese researchers exploring the Antarctic in 1957; the story was made into the film Nankyoku Monogatari.

Sony starts with Blu-ray shipping

Sony has begun shipping its 25GB single layer Blu-ray Disc recording media in America. In addition, the company announced that it will be launching a dual layer 50GB capacity disc is set to debut in June. “Sony knows Blu-ray technology like no other company,” said Mike Lucas, director of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Media and Application Solutions Division, which is handy as it developed the technology. Sony’s Blu-ray media also supports a 2x recording speed, which provides a high data transfer rate of up to 72 Mbps, making it ideal for high-definition video recording and data storage applications.

In addition to media, Sony will soon offer a wide range of Blu-ray Disc devices, including a Blu-ray Disc player, VAIO desktop and notebook computers, and an internal Blu-ray Disc drive. The BD-R (write-once) 25GB and BD-RE (rewritable) 25GB recording media have suggested retail prices of $20 and $25, respectively. The soon to come BD-R 50GB and BD-RE 50GB recording media will have suggested retail prices of $48 and $60, respectively. On the other hand, Sony delayed the shipment of first high resolution movies on Blu-ray discs. The company had originally planned to ship eight movie titles on May 23 and seven more on June 13. Now the initial eight titles will ship on June 20 while a new launch date for the latter seven has not been decided. Now we need to wait only few months or years till the prices become affordable also for normal customers. The idea of burning half of my drive on one disc is pretty cool…
