We got here another two new releases of an average sci-fi thriller “Ultraviolet”. Two because the first one from release group COBRA was nuked because of bad IVTC. Operators of the Internet2 consortium said they will be able to boost the speed of the ultra-fast research network by as much as 80 times by the fall of next year. To accomplish this, the fiber optic lines will send data using different colors of light. The Internet2 is a network separate from the Internet that connects some 200 colleges and universities, as well as various corporations and researchers. It currently uses fiber optic cables provided by Qwest, however the new network would have cables all to itself.

Each color, or wavelength, will be able to transmit data at a speed of 10 Gigabit per second. With 10 colors over the same wire, that allows for a maximum speed of 100 Gbps. Eventually, users of the Internet2 network would have 80 wavelengths available. Currently, the network has a limit in theory of 10 Gbps. Researchers haven’t gotten there yet due to hardware restrictions, although they recently set a new speed record of 8.8 Gbps in laboratory tests. The speed boost would mean a two-hour movie could be transferred in several seconds as opposed to a half-minute with the old network.

The reason for the upgrade is fairly straightforward. New uses of Internet2 need a faster data rate than what is currently available. For example, the second generation of the network would help a project to link together radio telescopes around the world. Great, and who will upgade our DSLs and cables ?

Seagate Technology today officially announced the release of a 750GB desk top hard drive, the latest version of its Barracuda 3.5-in. drives. The Barracuda 7200.10 model comes in capacities ranging from 200GB to 750GB and features support for Ultra ATA/100 and SATA interfaces with either 8MB or 16MB of data cache buffer. Besides increasing the 7200.10’s areal density, Seagate seems to have improved the drive’s acoustics. The company claims 27dB idle and 30dB seek noise levels for the top-end 750GB 7200.10, compared to 28dB and 32dB for the 500GB 7200.9, which has the same number of platters.

Noise levels for the rest of the line aren’t entirely clear, though, with alternating claims of 25dB and 27dB idle noise levels for 400GB and smaller models. Nonetheless, Seagate says the drives are “now shipping to the worldwide distribution channel,” and that they all sport a five-year warranty. You can get this brand new 750 GB for the price about $500, but it’s better to wait few weeks, because the availability of this product is very limited yet. The time to change my old 120 GB Seagate is probably coming…
