Skype reached 100 million registered users

Skype, the global Internet communications company, announced that its registered users have crossed the 100 million milestone. The VoIP company says it now has more than 100 million registered users of its free Internet-based calling service. This is more than two times the number of users the company had last year. Last year, Skype was bought by eBay in a deal that was worth between $2.5 billion and $4 billion.

“Skype has grown in leaps and bounds by making it simple for anyone across the world with an Internet connection to do something they could not do before - talk for as long as they like, to whoever they like for no cost. Passing 100 million registered users within such a short time reinforces how much people love how easy Skype makes it to call friends, family and colleagues all over the world for free,” said Niklas Zennstrom, CEO and co-founder of Skype.

The thing that makes Skype so attractive to users is the same formula that Google uses. It’s simple and it works. However, while Skype has proven to be enormously popular with consumers, businesses have become increasingly concerned with the unfettered use by employees at work. Many employers are worried that the file sharing capabilities of Skype present a security risk to their organisations. Anyway, Skype is a new phenomenon, which showed the way how to make some piece of software extremely popular…

Huge personal data leak in Japan

The personal details of 66,000 subscribers to a Japanese national newspaper have leaked online via file sharing software. It is the latest in a long line of serious leaks in Japan, which have included sensitive military, police and medical records. The Mainichi Shimbun announced Thursday that information on about 66,000 subscribers has leaked onto the Internet via a new file-sharing application called Share. Share differs from the notorious filesharing application Winny but has similar functions. The developer of Winny was arrested in 2004. Share can be infected by computer viruses that cause it to transfer data from a local hard drive to the Internet.

The information taken from the major daily includes names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and e-mail addresses, but no financial information, the Mainichi said. The leak was discovered Wednesday by a special team of Mainichi reporters covering cybercrime and terrorism. According to the newspaper, an employee moved the data to his own computer, which had Share installed. His computer is then believed to have been infected with a virus, they said, adding that the exact date of the leak is still under investigation. Once the data is on either the Winny or Share networks, it is very difficult to remove. To aid anonymity, files are automatically uploaded and cached within the network. Simply removing the infected computer will have little impact, even if no other users deliberately download or share the data. This Asia is still a bit wild…

IMDB bottom #24: BloodRayne dvdrip

Not every movie may be a top quality blockbuster. But not every movie has to be that bad to receive ranking of 2.2 at IMDB as BloodRayne. The only interesting thing about this movie is probably Kristanna Loken in main role, who is well known from Terminator 3. But this beauty can’t save whole film, so please don’t take this too much seriously. Anyway, the release is quite nice, and also 1 month before retail DVD…

In eighteenth century Romania, Rayne, a dhampir (half-human, half-vampire), prone to fits of blind blood rage but saddled with a compunction for humans, strives to avenge her mother’s rape by her father, Kagan, King of Vampires. Two vampire hunters, Sebastian and Vladimir, from the Brimstone Society persuade her to join their cause.

Nice dvdrip of “The Libertine” with Johnny Depp

Guys from release group DONE published nice new dvdrip of decent drama “The Libertine”, which stars some good actors like Johnny Depp or John Malkovich. This 2CD release has pretty clean picture and also 5.1 sound, so it’s really good choice for all fans of these actors…

A man who lives for pleasure finds his hedonism betrays him in time in this film adaptation of the play by Stephen Jeffreys. The second Earl of Rochester, John Wilmot (Johnny Depp), was a notorious figure in 17th century Europe; well-respected as a poet and author, Wilmot also earned no small degree of gossip for his freewheeling sex life and appetite for decadence. Wilmot was close friends with Charles II (John Malkovich), the powerful and Machiavellian ruler of England, and enjoyed a passionate romance with Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), an actress of note. But Wilmot’s seemingly charmed life took a turn for the worse when he wrote a satirical play lampooning his friend Charles II; the monarch failed to see the humor, and exiled the author from Britain.

Google launching 3D modeling app: SketchUp

Google has launched a free version of the 3D modeling software it acquired when it bought @Last Software last month. Google SketchUp, which is free for personal use, includes simple tools for creating 3D models of a variety of items, including houses, sheds, decks, home additions, and woodworking projects. The software comes with a plug-in for Google Earth, so that 3D items created with SketchUp are picked-up by the service that typically provides satellite views of geographical locations. In addition, Google has also released 3D Warehouse, which is the online storage for work created in SketchUp. The service enables users to search and share 3D models.

If you’ve ever used a 3D or CAD application, SketchUp is remarkably easy to pick up. There are familiar-looking draw and extrude tools—though, as with virtually all the tools in this app, they have simpler names. Extrude, for example, which gives volume to otherwise flat 2D objects is called “Push/Pull.” As in simple CAD tools, there’s guidance as you draw lines, arcs, rectangles and circles. Guidance is key here since all your work is all done on a 3D plane, with three-point perspective. In practice, this means that as you draw, SketchUp helps you find the end and middle points of lines and squares—and end the spaces over these lines and squares—and tells you if the square you just drew is really a square. Virtually any plane you draw, on any surface, can be extruded. If you’re designing a house, for example, you might push in windows, pull out overhanging roofs or run staircases up, down or around your structure.

In addition, Google launched 3D Warehouse, online storage for work created in SketchUp. The service also enables users to search and share models. As with Google Earth, by the way, there’s still an industrial-strength version of SketchUp aimed at professionals, at an industrial-strength pricetag: $495. Google SketchUp is available for Windows 2000 and XP. These guys really know how to do they work well…

Movie Chaos: dvdscr and dvdrip in one day

A bit unknown australian movie “Chaos” was released today. And not only in 1 version as it’s usual, but immediatelly in dvd screener and dvdrip. This situation is pretty rare, I don’t remember much movies who had got through this, but it’s better for final user, and that’s important. The movie stars some well-known actors including Wesley Snipes so it may be worth short try…

“Chaos” stars Englishman Jason Statham (”The Transporter”) as Quentin Conners, your average maverick/cowboy/loose cannon cop who, when we first meet him, has been suspended from the force (aren’t they always?) for doing maverick/cowboy/loose cannon cop stuff. (A bridge, a rainy night, gunplay, and a dead hostage figures prominently into the film’s many twists.) After a bank robber calling himself Lorenz (Wesley Snipes) takes over a metro bank and demands Quentin’s re-instatement for reasons unknown, Quentin’s boss has no choice but to relent. Just in time, too, because Lorenz not only plans to achieve the largest (and secret) bank heist in history, but he has murderous plans for Quentin.
