18 year old Botnet owner busted in New Zealand
New Zealand Police this week cracked down on an alleged botnet ringleader in New Zealand, who the FBI claims had illegal control over 1 million computers. The sweep is part of the FBI’s second phase of “Operation Bot Roast”–the same operation which resulted in four felony charges against 26-year-old Los Angeles security consultant John Schiefer. The New Zealand suspect, who goes by the name of “Akill”, came under fire after an information-sharing exercise between the New Zealand Police, the U.S. Secret Service and the FBI. He has been interviewed by New Zealand Police, and investigators have seized computers from his home. FBI Director Robert Mueller said botnets are the “weapon of choice” for cybercriminals.
Since “Operation Bot Roast” was announced last June, eight individuals have been indicted, pled guilty or been sentenced for crimes related to botnet activity, according to the FBI. Law enforcement agencies have also served 13 search warrants in the U.S. and overseas. FBI Cyber Division assistant director James Finch has warned users to protect their systems. “Practicing strong computer-security habits, such as updating antivirus software, installing a firewall, using strong passwords, and employing good e-mail and Web-security practices, are as basic as putting locks on your doors and windows,” Finch said. “Without employing these safeguards, botnets, along with criminal and possibly terrorist activities, will continue to flourish,” Finch added. Most individuals identified by the FBI in “Operation Bot Roast II” are male, U.S. citizens, under 30 years old. Time to shut down your tiny botnets lads, this stinks problems…

OWNED!
I’m getting tired of these ***dows botnets.
If you are too stupid to use a computer, get a Mac or something.. heh
“Time to shut down your tiny botnets lads, this stinks problems…”
Lads? There is no need to act friendly towards these people. My server got hit by a botnet last weekend sending thousands of requests from many different IPs at my server. It took me days to get things online again.
Some types of these things are almost impossible to prevent and it’s about time they’re getting noticed.
owned
Anthony: yeah i am fully aware of that. i just know quite a lot of people who experiment with botnets and don’t really know in what troubles can they get…
I want viruses for my virtual machine but i cant find any. I wanna join this botnet.
yes my country’s not all greener pasture over here.Actually couple of young girls on one news tonight actually applauded his exploits.We have a nice visit from the fbi.
Thanks for posting some new zealand news can you post maybe the tattooist dvd rip lol.
ceep those charlies down!
but seriously all the hacking is an bugger lately !
i red that hackers can use PS3 to crack 128b prottected passwords within few hours bsicly cas the procesor in ps3 is 100 times more powerfull then an ordinary pc’s
and let me note … many bank accounts are secured by 128b password encryption soft
I hope get gets raped in prison and then gets tortured for hours and hours before he finally dies.
HANG THEM HIGH!
@8: or you can just use ur GPU
LMFAO i just shut my net off a couple weeks ago LMFAO cauz i got a phone call BUWEHWHAHAHAHAHAH
Bubba: Why are you here baby ?
Akill: Cus I hack computers
Bubba: Oh cool. Bend over.
FRY HIM !!!!!
the chair is what he deserve.
@8: Isn’t that a bit stupid?
@Ozzy,
” red that hackers can use PS3 to crack 128b prottected passwords within few hours bsicly cas the procesor in ps3 is 100 times more powerfull then an ordinary pc’s”
Very true, I wish Apple did not switch from PPC to intel.
Don’t get me started on New Zealand…
parallel processing FTW
but you can’t compare cell to pc processors… at least not without sounding stupid to the educated reader.
Martin called me this morning asking what a botnet was
He thought it was some kind of fishnet panties for men with a hole over the a$$
stupid 9ay
Thanks for the post Martin , enjoying this site /articles a lot !
@19 – your attitude/life sucks. Getting increasingly
fed up with your verbal litter. Your’e probably some deformed acne-ridden pathetic little pre-pube nerd who turns into a keyboard-warrior tough guy online. Tell your mom to stop feeding you + please die soon you infested little squirt
rlslog_sucks_a$$ why are you being mean? Especially to people you dont even know? You’re a horrible person.
@19
we all KNOW rlslog sucks a$$
no need to keep posting about it lol
Haha, Terrorist activities. Why don’t they just drop that word for once now. It holds no meaning anymore.
@13 LOL,very good
Haha woke up this morning and saw New Zealand in a headline on RlsLog. You guys are pretty fast he was only caught yesterday, and like Tony said couple of girls actually applauded his work. Disgraceful.
But yeah, thats a bloody good point? Wheres the Tattooist DVDRip? Movie is LOOOOOOONNNGGGGG Over-due. Eagle vs Shark is already out, AND Black Sheep haha.
I’m over 30 so I guess I’m safe.. :p
@23 Exactly Seb, I can’t take anything seriously which employs the word “terrorist” to give it weight.
Kiwi sheep shagger caught, shame they missed all the english ones.
the best thing rlslog could do is to remove the comments option on this dam site .. so many people with no life but sitting at a computer and not really knowing that theres a real life out there “but stop i forgot they are all keyboard warriors arnt they so they dont go outside cause the big boys will smack em down !!!!”
rlslog is slowing becoming a site that gives good infomation on new releases but likes to have tit heads like these fill there database space with useless crap like above !.
For your info no hangings in new zealand or chair or death sentence.Helen clark pm against it.

Lawl i just have to laugh at these people, process handling wise. its only the same as Intel’s E6300. so i dont know where ya got that 100 times more powerfull. (unless your modern PC is a 486 PC XD with a whopping 18~64MHz processor)
BTW according to technical info and specs given by sony. the processor out runs the modern PC’s in one thing only. and thats the part where it handless physics calculations. And its only roughly twice as fast.
P.S. Happy camping in your 486 land. or do you prefer MSX by spectravideo? or maybe C64?
damn kiwi. hope they hang him by the balls!!
You have to be extremely stupid or just naive to get caught, I have a few large botnets that would probably number higher than that and I’m always careful.
There’s very few options that can allow people to track you down, so it’s fairly straightforward to protect your identity.
Within the PS3 there are six SPU (Synergistic Processing Unit) processor cores. Each core is able to do four calculations, so across all of the cores it is possible to do 24 calculations at the same time.
the current upper limit of 10–15 million cycles per second (in Intel-based architecture) can go up to 1.4 billion cycles per second on a ps3 due to the number of vector processors.
@ENT:
and that’s why you can’t compare them…
the better fit yould be to compare cell to a CPU+GPU+PPU combo, but how exactly do you benchmark that?
