18 year old Botnet owner busted in New Zealand

New Zealand Police this week cracked down on an alleged botnet ringleader in New Zealand, who the FBI claims had illegal control over 1 million computers. The sweep is part of the FBI’s second phase of “Operation Bot Roast”–the same operation which resulted in four felony charges against 26-year-old Los Angeles security consultant John Schiefer. The New Zealand suspect, who goes by the name of “Akill”, came under fire after an information-sharing exercise between the New Zealand Police, the U.S. Secret Service and the FBI. He has been interviewed by New Zealand Police, and investigators have seized computers from his home. FBI Director Robert Mueller said botnets are the “weapon of choice” for cybercriminals.

Since “Operation Bot Roast” was announced last June, eight individuals have been indicted, pled guilty or been sentenced for crimes related to botnet activity, according to the FBI. Law enforcement agencies have also served 13 search warrants in the U.S. and overseas. FBI Cyber Division assistant director James Finch has warned users to protect their systems. “Practicing strong computer-security habits, such as updating antivirus software, installing a firewall, using strong passwords, and employing good e-mail and Web-security practices, are as basic as putting locks on your doors and windows,” Finch said. “Without employing these safeguards, botnets, along with criminal and possibly terrorist activities, will continue to flourish,” Finch added. Most individuals identified by the FBI in “Operation Bot Roast II” are male, U.S. citizens, under 30 years old. Time to shut down your tiny botnets lads, this stinks problems…

    “Time to shut down your tiny botnets lads, this stinks problems…”

    Lads? There is no need to act friendly towards these people. My server got hit by a botnet last weekend sending thousands of requests from many different IPs at my server. It took me days to get things online again.

    Some types of these things are almost impossible to prevent and it’s about time they’re getting noticed.

    the best thing rlslog could do is to remove the comments option on this dam site .. so many people with no life but sitting at a computer and not really knowing that theres a real life out there “but stop i forgot they are all keyboard warriors arnt they so they dont go outside cause the big boys will smack em down !!!!”

    rlslog is slowing becoming a site that gives good infomation on new releases but likes to have tit heads like these fill there database space with useless crap like above !.

    Lawl i just have to laugh at these people, process handling wise. its only the same as Intel’s E6300. so i dont know where ya got that 100 times more powerfull. (unless your modern PC is a 486 PC XD with a whopping 18~64MHz processor)

    BTW according to technical info and specs given by sony. the processor out runs the modern PC’s in one thing only. and thats the part where it handless physics calculations. And its only roughly twice as fast.

    P.S. Happy camping in your 486 land. or do you prefer MSX by spectravideo? or maybe C64?

    You have to be extremely stupid or just naive to get caught, I have a few large botnets that would probably number higher than that and I’m always careful.

    There’s very few options that can allow people to track you down, so it’s fairly straightforward to protect your identity.

    Within the PS3 there are six SPU (Synergistic Processing Unit) processor cores. Each core is able to do four calculations, so across all of the cores it is possible to do 24 calculations at the same time.

    the current upper limit of 10–15 million cycles per second (in Intel-based architecture) can go up to 1.4 billion cycles per second on a ps3 due to the number of vector processors.

    December 3rd, 2007 | 08:30

    @ENT:
    and that’s why you can’t compare them…

    the better fit yould be to compare cell to a CPU+GPU+PPU combo, but how exactly do you benchmark that?
