12 million people in USA still use dial-up

Web browsing and e-mailing are critical tools for those looking for work. That’s a major reason why dial-up Internet has maintained its small share of the market. Accessing the Web for less than $8 per month is an attractive option for those customers and a reason why companies such as EarthLink and NetZero are still offering dial-up. They have even seen an uptick in the number of users. “If you need a job, you really need to stay connected,” said Kevin Brand, EarthLink’s senior vice president of product management. “You can use the Internet for 45 cents per day and that’s affordable for anyone. Using the Internet is the best way to find a job nowadays.” Brand referred to EarthLink’s “Connect for Less” program, which offers dial-up service for $7.95 per month. NetZero is offering a monthly dial-up plan for as low as $9.95 per month. Brand said between nine and 12 million people still use dial-up.

Most dial-up customers have stayed with the program because it is all they know. Some are delaying an upgrade until they can better afford it. Others are making the switch from broadband to dial-up, even though the transition can be frustrating for some. “We have seen a slight uptick in orders these days,” Brand said. “I think it has a lot to do with the economy right now … When people see their cable bills, they can suffer from sticker shock. It gives people reason to reconsider what they’re paying for.” In a survey of dial-up users, the most common reason for not switching to broadband is the cost. Thirty-five percent said they would not upgrade until prices fall, according to a study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

They should phase out dial-up here. Maybe then people will have to switch to broadband if they really need the internet and then more people will demand lower prices and hopefully companies respond to that. Just a thought.

just fyi guys – dial up can be also quad ISDN line which attains speed of 256/256kbps which DSL in distan't locations can't (7km+ ~ 4.3miles+) ;)

  14. sYgnal
    February 28th, 2009 | 12:29

I can understand someone using "dial-up" if they don't have a job because it's cheap & you can find more jobs on the net. But, beyond that, which is more important, your time or your money. Actually, a lot of the times speed(how quickly you find the as, send a resume or email) can be a factor on whether or not you get the job. IMHO,I would think with "dial-up", it would just be too frustrating to use nowadays. If I have to ever downgrade I would go with DSL, DirecTV & Vonage.

"“You can use the Internet for 45 cents per day and that’s affordable for anyone."

    I do not agree that Broadband is a rip-off. I get 20/5 for roughly $33 a month which is,about, $1 a day.

Didn't even know you could still buy ISDN not to mention dial-up connections … but how can that possibly pay out? Especially if you're poor there's nothing better than at least the slowest flat rate because it gets you all the entertainment for free and maybe costs twice as much as those dial-up connection. Imho even the more expensive packages pay out for example 50mbit flat, HD TV, phone flat (and a couple of other extras too) are 65 bucks here.

    February 28th, 2009 | 15:39

@ 40: your just plain stupid.

In Spain I pay 41€ (35$) for 6 mb cable. On torrents I get max 680/30 and on http downloads I can get up to 700kbps but normaly it stays around 400kbs. They say I have 200kbps upload speed but I only get 30kbs, which is a pain when uploading torrents.

Here dial-up is actualy more expencive then broad band cuz they just charge you like if it was a phone call to your phone bill. So people just get 1 mb adsl for 12€ a month.

I'm guessing those 12 million (out of 300+ million) live in places where better service either isn't available, or they are just living in the stone age.

DSL is only a few more $ and a hundred times faster and more convenient than dial-up I'm guessing you'd have to be dirt poor not to switch.

Unfortunately I live not only where dial-up is the best I can get (although its only 1 mile from where I could get 10Mb dsl or cable, but the damn companies plain refuse to extend their service, and I can't afford to move), but even so theres only 2 or 3 companies with a local phone number.
And whats the only one of them that don't disconnect me after 2 hours, cap service and ban users who use their 'unlimited' dial-up too much (and block SSH for some stupid ass reason unless you pay up for their 'business' dial-up)? Freakin AOL.
Yeah, not only am I stuck with dial-up cause the damn duopoly refuses to extend service cause why the hell bother, but the best dial-up I can get is god damn AOL. (not that I'm bitter or anything…)

Virgin Media is the only decent broadband in the UK but is very expensive.

However my internet has never gone down thus far and I have been using it since it was originally Blueyonder.

I get around 2.3MB/s max download through Usenet and Rapidshare which isn't so bad.

The downlaods are unlimited but the caps are annoying. However the caps seem to be stopping? I downloaded DOW2 during the peak time and didnt get capped.

The reason internet is more accessible in europe is there is a lot less land to lay fiber, in America nothing is in walking/biking distance outside of the big cities: everything is spread out dialup/satellite/power lines are the best options, maybe dsl if you're lucky but routing is usually terrible

I know that, where I live in the USA (midwest), there are MANY areas that don't even have cable ran to them and they are too far away for DSL.

Their only choices are wireless, which is terribly expensive for it's relatively slow speeds (and the fact that you have to buy the equipment really sucks), or in SOME cases there's providers that offer microwave wireless internet. And the wireless still doesn't cover every area. But again, you have to buy expensive equipment, and often a tower to get above trees as it's line of sight.

So the only choice for many people is dialup. I didn't hear if the govt ever got anything passed yet to help fund the USA in getting broadband to everyone, but I really hope that it does work out. Heck, where I am, you can get 768K DSL for $9.99/mo. So there's no reason that price should stop people from sticking with dialup.

High speed internet is cheep… I'm a IT Technician and its very very rare that someone still has dial up the main reason they have it is not because of the price its because they don't know anything else which is true…. but saying the price is to high??? thats not even a excuse anymore! come on people the min high speed internet 5 mbps is 15-20 bucks a month. some of my clients that have dial up complain "why is all my updates taking 5 hours to download" and i keep telling them its because you have dial up and they give me a blank stare…. its mostly ignorance towards technology thats why some people don't upgrade.
but if you use the internet 2 times a week only for e-mail and online bingo thats ok to have dial up! but not if you want to download large files and stream videos from youtube it just dose not work out.

    @30

The United States lacking in overall broadband coverage is mainly due to the factor of it's size and urban sprawls. It's easy for a country such as Sweden or even Japan and South Korea to build out infrastructure and in the case of the latter two subsidize it greatly and openly. American urban areas are ribboned along the east and west coast and along the the great lakes and rivers. Private companies don't always handle that specific area as well so you might only see a buildout to a decent income areas or only the areas they are responsible for (why would they pay for their competitors?). The same exact thing happens with cell phone coverage and towers where a new company will find itself locked out of decent or prime spots since the major players have those on lockdown and might not even lease access to you and if they do it costs you an arm and a leg.

Someone please find another country that spans as much area as the United States with a similar population and show us how they have been doing with their internet rollouts. Canada isn't even an option due to low population and the biggest density is roughly 500 miles or less from the american border anyways.

Most americans living in a state or urban area usually have access to average to above average broadband barring special circumstances (suburbs ghetto old area).

Downtown areas in most cities I have lived or visited that have around 100k populations or more have fiber primarily for businesses but the sonet rings do exist.

This problem is similar to the one where people throw out statistics about how other countries have a better overall educational system. It's true and misleading at the same time. Sure if America was a small player such as any of the single eurpean union nations or korea or even japan we would have just as good coverage for internet as well as our education.

It's a little shortsighted to compare a country that might be the size of just one of our states or smaller (We have fifty of them remember) and some states even have higher GDPs of most of the countries people compare.

    @62

China controls it's own access. America does not it's not paid for by taxpayers in any literal sense and won't be if ever. The labor is cheap most live in third world conditions have you been to China? Don't think for a second that most of China has access to a fiber connection it's just not true. People still on boats and in what we would call a shanty. The cities aren't bad overall but don't forget the other over half a billion chinese there.

Japan is a very concentrated set of islands I would expect nothing less for what little area they have to cover to bring it to most people.

I live in New Zealand and it cost 40 dollars a month for 3gb 400B/s down 800B/s up, in other words NZ live up to its reputation as a 3rd world country, its not really its just a very very dumb country and our stupid ex goverment in there wise wisdom sold all our communications lines, thick as Helen Clark, ohwell the new goverments paying for fibre optic to be laid out to the whole country, then telecom will suffer like they deserve evil monopoly.

I'm from Pakistan. I pay USD 12 per month for 1Mbps down 256Kbps up. We have WiMax at 8Mbps but the company offering that has extremely poor customer service.

If they really truly cared for these individuals looking for a job, they would offer dial-up for free.

wow this is pretty sad but 25 a month for really high speed Internet doesn't seem like too much *shrugs* …. it must suck like a motha to only be able to afford dial-up or have to go back to it … just wow. smh I only had dial-up for the years of 1999 and 2000 and I never went back ….. I have verizon dsl while it's fast enough 90% of the time (I d'l a lot of stuff at once very often and I'm usually doing 15 other things online at the same time as well) my family is planning on getting cable internet from hughes or comcast by the end of the year or beginning of the next.

here in the US, where DSL is not available AT&T decided to raise the price of dial up to 24.95 a month, and dsl lite users can pick that option up for 14.95… and where i live dial-up IS the only option for a land line. so now i am looking to the skys for sat internet. which is very expensive. as of now i use my blackberry and a cell phone repeater system to get enough signal in my house so that i can use EDGE. i think 24.95 for dial-up is AT&T's way of saying we really dont care about you, you have no other choice, so we can charge you what we want.
