Mozilla’s Response to Google Chrome
Mozilla CEO John Lily shared his thoughts on Google’s new browser project, Chrome, and what that means for Mozilla.
“It should come as no real surprise that Google has done something here — their business is the web, and they’ve got clear opinions on how things should be, and smart people thinking about how to make things better. Chrome will be a browser optimized for the things that they see as important, and it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves.” Mozilla’s Europe president, Tristan Nitot also chimed in during an interview with PCPro, stating that they don’t view this as a direct attack on Firefox, even if it did catch them by surprise. “I’ll take another example: just before Microsoft launched Vista, it invited us [to work with it] so that Firefox works better on Windows Vista. Because for it, Firefox being a top-tier application that was very successful – we now have 200 million users around the world – it could not afford to have Firefox run slowly on Vista. Therefore, it helped us improve Firefox for Vista. That’s just the same for Google. It wants Firefox to perform well with its applications, that’s for sure. Indeed, it even wants IE to perform well with Gmail and the rest. It’s just that it has very limited control over this. That’s why Google’s been frustrated and it is launching this Chrome browser.”

Memory usage with only opening homepage(1 tab)
Chrome.exe: 34,658k
iexplore.exe 51,763k
firefox.exe 62,682k
and man is it FAST!
Chrome.exe: 94,658k
iexplore.exe 85,763k
firefox.exe 17,682k
FireFox all the way.
Google did one hell of a job. The first release of their first version works really well. In 6 months it could easily be one of the top browsers.
I like it, but it’s missing a bunch of features from Firefox and IE out-of-the-box (bookmark manager, greater control over tabs) but it’s still very, very new, so it looks promising.
Mind you, the only reason why I think memory usage is so low on chrome compared to Firefox is because of the lack of extensions.
Safari.exe 205 mega
?
It needs Adblock though!
for sum reason..i cant log into myspace with chrome..so until then…..
Isn’t Chrome what was used to make ugly cars shiny back in the 70s….but the cars were still ugly on the inside anyway. Same applies here. Google sucks my left testicle and they can take their “Do no evil” motto and shove it.
I like Firefox better because it has extensions that i use every day, like pop up blocker, developer tools, youtube, image save, improved bookmark, content blocking, and some other stuff…
im using chrome now, pretty fast loading, looks good, acts nice, i dunno…i like it. and its brand spankin’ new so…who knows, it might rain supreme, however FF will always have a place in my heart…and IE will always have a place in my trash can
[im still on IE 6 whatever....screw updating something i wont use]
Fastest browser out and more stable than FF3, absolutely love it.
I just tested out Chrome, and I have to say, I like it, even though I really wanted it to suck. Still, its standout features seemed to have been copied from other browsers – the private browsing which is on Safari and IE, and the home page, which looks exactly like Opera’s speed dial!
Still, I would think more seriously about getting Chrome when it enters beta 2, but for now, I’ll stick with Opera, which in my opinion is the best out there.
well ya true chrome is faster then firefox but if u comepare it chrome doesnt got a popup blocker no adons r avalaible for chrome at the moment but ya i like chrome in the end just gotta wait a while for chrome to b compatiable wit adons and stuff like davy jones said he couldnt log into his myspace its only a beta guys just hold up i cant wait till official release of there first version
doesnt run on w2k pro..
I’m okay with things by Google probably because, like several other nerds/engineers, I’m blindly biased in the sense that Google is some sort of Godsend. But my concern is that it needs to get Adblock.
Then I realize… isn’t Google ALREADY an advertising agency? How many “advertisement by Google” things have we already seen?!
are you guys running windows 98se on 128mb of EDO ram or something? worrying so much about 20-30 etc.. megs of memory usage… yikes
Firefox with tons of extensions and tabs right now – 39mb usage
oh booooooo 39mb on 4096 that’s AWFUL.
ok i have to say im surpised yes it lacks of some feature like spellchecking for more than one language the seperate search bar and ofc adblock+ but hey its the first day of its release lets dont be cruel
Memory usage with only this page:
firefox.exe 51.896 K
iexplore.exe 44.280 K
opera.exe 27.284 K
chrome.exe 22.512 K
I didn’t expect that Chrome will be that good. I’m using Opera and Firefox for years but Chrome has impressed me even though it is still in beta.
+ small memory usage
+ instant startup speed
+ more advanced than Firefox without extensions
+ compact design
+ intuitive interface
I have a lot of add-ons in my Firefox. There is no way I am switching to Chrome no matter how good it is. If Firefox becomes second best, so be it.
Poor Microsoft, they are getting bad news every day.
Call me a skeptic….but isn’t google notorious for holding onto user info and giving it to the feds when they ask….I don’t think I want them seeing every page I look at on the web.
OOhhhooh
Is it???
Google My “Chrome”
or
“Chrome” My Google
Beat my ff3 extensions first then maybe i’ll give it a Googleing.
Cheers
Wow! What we talk about! Who even remember time before IE?
Netscape Navigator was only one… What now…? Google launch new baby! So.. All appset no spellcheking, no Ads Block.. blabla.. common.. Its just a first step.. Back i in years I was able get their shares when thej get on IPO looks like around $80 if i remem.. I have not money even for one. Now we all know real price in market… Not a lot was believe in their model of search engine, I was… It proven by time. So why all around so sceptic? First bugs! Ok! It testing time even for end up product. Chrome probably will get place where supose to be, no doubt.Peace to all.
Wow it is fast..Good when just surfing. I like how its setup…I’ll still use firefox till google gets the ad-ons.
Extensions are slowing down Firefox and causing compatibility issues and vulnerability. If you can live without them, don’t use them. There will be extensions for Chrome when Google finds out how to sandbox them from the rest of the OS.
i like the “incognito mode” for pron browsing coming as standard.
@2
Bull$hit.
Chrome loads fast, makes websites look bigger because theres less crap on screen, has plugin support, speeds up javascript & runs it in a virtual machine (so its much harder to get exploited with) & wont crash like Firefox often does.
All it needs now is some decent plugins such as Adblock, bugmenot & web dev tools.
http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome
oops did i say pron???
i meant “for times when you want to browse in stealth mode, for example, to plan surprises like gifts or birthdays, Google Chrome offers the incognito browsing mode.”
http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=95464&hl=en-GB
Yes it’s fast, but I don’t see all the features on the 26page tutorial on how it was developed etc.
And NO it’s NOT safe …… it let a Trojan through.
The A/V terminated it but without AdblockPLUS and NOscript it’s too much of a pain at the moment.
When it does get out of beta it could be usefull when someone makes the portable (no-install) version
And the crap uninstaller leaves a lot behind
IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and now Chrome. We’re starting to finally have some decent choices and options.
Like stated before it just a beta. I used it one hour and realy like it for clean interface, see no any problem with stability and speed. It just a cool new product. Sure a lot people will try find similarity with other browsers, so it juast a proces of begining.. Development in process Time will judge! To who concern about initial miss of kinda plugins and add blockers, only I can say first block you can do just yourself in your system. Just Update your HOST file in your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc directory! You will be surprise maybe you dont need a bunch blockers at all after. Fresh updated HOST file we always can find @ http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm, Peace to all.
i have to say i didnt know what to expect. the process things looked pretty promising. then i opened my task manager and saw that chrome was only 32kb…. and firefox was a little higher. well i put about 6 tabs on it like my firefox had already… and i saw my task manager and it had 5 chrome processes (still no biggee..) but each of them were about 28-35KB… firefox is still faster.
but its still beta.. im sure there is more to come. but firefox is still my first choice
Google can suck my nut sack!!!
yeah.. I don’t see why everyone is fussing saying it has no “ad block”. Been using it all day and it is doing a better job than FF, imo.
I have gone to sites which I ALWAYS had pop-up ads with FF and with Chrome they were all conveniently tucked away at the bottom of the tab for me to ignore till I close the browser .. or open if it was something I really wanted to see (like a video player for a web site).
netscape ftw lol
spyware from a company I don’t trust.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3121/2821783957_b4633f072e_o.png wooho
lol that chrome is total shait
Until it will have a mouse gesture
I will not use it.
and a developers nightmare
another browser to do optimization for.
All other browsers have the full-screen mode so what’s the big deal? If you really need the space then fullscreen is for you! My display is big enough 20″! Oh and the incognito mode is not really that incognito if you know what I mean! I’m not that impressed! What I like about IE is that I can install any search engine I want: piratebay, btjunkie and even realeaselog’s search!
Well,
We needed to test this new browser against one of University programs all our students use.
1st problem – as an administrator, I had no chance to install it for *all users* on a networked multi user machine. Consequently Logging on in my normal role I was unable to access it. Why choose to install a ****.exe file in Documents & Settings/named User/App data?
Testing against Blackboard Vista, half the stuff students can quite happily access in IE7 or any of the other browsers wouldn’t work.
I didn’t find a way of over-riding the pop-up blocker – a must have for our Intranet and other programs in use here.
I didn’t like the way you couldn’t lock down your Bookmarks/favorites.
Definitely needs further improvement for corporate/Educational needs.
We’re now going to have a hard time explaining to our Students that this is another fancy piece of software that is incompatible with University systems.
Be a long time before we can recommend its use to students other than for non-academic use.
this is not gonna hurt IE. people who use ie dont know about other browers or they are too lazy/stupid to install one. this will however hurt firefox massively. i will run this with firefox, until they have adblock and other stuff available on chrome.
Why would everyone expect adblock on Chrome? Google is the biggest online advertising agency in existence. One of the major frustrations they had with Mozilla Foundation is the non-profit organization absolutely refused to rein in third party plugins, namely adblock. This is among the reasons Google developed Chrome in the first place, adding adblock would defeat the whole purpose.
Chrome is very impressive, fast, clean and stylish layout.
Will definetly rein over IE, not sure about FF3 just yet though.
When it gets its own tool bar and add-ons then it will seriously become a competitor to FF
@philips14c
I don’t like full screen like most people. I like intuitive interface that don’t use much space and has everything I need.
Incognito is very useful because you don’t have to delete all history and cookies, just open incognito window and that window will not leave any traces on your computer.
I just installed releaselog search engine in Chrome, it was easier than in any other browser. You should try using Chrome before leaving any negative comments…
using it now but have found bugs in it already, but it’s only a beta so that’s ok. Had a much higher mem use on opening page that FF3 for me. Nearly twice that of FF3, again i think as it’s a beta this is system dependent on the mem results.
FF is the best but chrome is a nice option to have. Still anything is better than IE.
Dunno why Google and FF just don’t join forces and make a even cool browser, as they’re both open source if i remember correctly.
I’ve tested it on my xp x64. Runs really fast, but 3 crashes in 10 minutes :s
First, sorry for my bad english.
I see when read this post, all of them not explain the real situation. MS inform in last month than IE8 have a feature for not capture the history in the browser, like hidden browse. The people of google know the MS gain the market with yours systems and the most people in the word use the software who include the system they have installed. That not is all, the ads words of Google work with see history and navigate of users. Imagine!! this business of adwords make a lot of money to google pocket and in this situation its down. So, not have another option to development a new web browser to keep up expectations. I havent with neither, but the first news, MS surprise me with this feature, 1 good, 1 bad.
Regards friends!.
Chrome ftw!
Also just tested the new crome browser and must say i really do like it, but im a firefox all the way. im just hoping that firefox and chrome wipe out **** IE.
Due to incognito, Chrome is the ultimate out-of-the-box porn browser!
first 2 exploits are out for chrome
Chrome 0.2.149.27 malicious link DoS Vulnerability
Chrome 0.2.149.27 Automatic File Download Exploit
Bah, I’ll stick with FF3 for now…
I think that chrome is a nice browser, but I also agree that Google has shaved too much off the block. I would really like if you could chose your home page. Safari, I like it, but unreliable. It frequently can’t access internet. Mozilla, space consuming, but good (I switched to safari because flash player is not compatible), and IE explorer lacks everything except for ugliness.
Apart from the chrome updater running process, that will come back to life 10 min. after you kill it, the damm thing (chrome installer) calls home every hour or so. Don’t trust it, aint gonna use it. And one last thing, was the GUI made for silver surfers?!
I got a small weiner
Chrome = Spyware
Chrome = Trojan
Chrome = No Privacy
Boycott Google.
