    The image is way too soft, will wait for the normal MKV encode (by the way Nyr, if you could post about it when it’s out that’d be nice ;) )

    @ 13 PB

    That’s not true at all. Blu Rays and HDDVDs come in 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 too, not just 1.78:1 (16X9 or 1280X720 for 720p). I’ve downloaded a TON of 720p releases and almost all are 1280X528 or something like that. Most of the 1280X720 stuff is HDTV releases.

    Here’s a simple explanation of the common aspect ratios:

    BD9 and BD5 are lower capacity variants of the Blu-ray Disc that contain Blu-ray compatible video and audio streams contained on a conventional DVD (650 nm wavelength / red laser) optical disc. Such discs offer the use of the same advanced compression technologies available to Blu-ray discs (including MPEG-4-AVC/H.264, SMPTE-421M/VC-1 and MPEG-2) while utilizing lower cost legacy media. BD9 utilizes a standard 8152MB DVD9 dual-layer disc while BD5 utilizes a standard 4489MB DVD5 single-layer disc.[75]

    Given that Blu-ray Discs are assumed to have a minimum transfer rate of 30.25 Mbit/s, BD9/BD5 discs must be spun at high speed, equivalent to a 3× DVD drive speed or greater.

    BD9 and BD5 discs can be authored using home computers for private showing using standard DVD±R recorders. AACS digital rights management is optional.

    The BD9 format was originally proposed by Warner Home Video, as a cost-effective alternative to regular Blu-ray Discs.[76] It was adopted as part of the BD-ROM basic format, file system and AV specifications. BD5 and BD9 are similar to 3× DVD.

    @19
    just because there are other aspect ratios doesn’t mean they correct, i also think the true and correct ratio is 1280×720… 720 stands for the number of horizontal lines, sure you can stretch and shrink the lines to fit in 720 lines but it’s just stupid considering all digital images are “pixel based” and a pixel is a square, so i believe it’s common sense if i say the 720 horizontal lines are supposed to be 720 pixels in height…

    the same goes for 1080i/p

    @ 19 fingerling

    Sorry to dissapoint you but blu ray disc standards are only 1280×720 or 1920×1080. The reason the mkv hd movies come in a variety of sizes are because of the computer equipment they are ment to play on. When hi def rips first came out the sceners decided to make rips somewhere along the 1280×528 or depending on the screen ratio so they could get 2:35 to 1 or any other wide screen format, because most people didn’t have the high end video cards or CPUs in their computers or HTPC to handle full 720p or 1080p rips. In essence all the HD rips for the exception of small few are CROPPED. If a rip is not 1280×720/1920×1080 then its not a true high def ratio. But you like the others are still learning that eventually BD5 or BD9 will be a scene format that will be the difference between a .avi wrapped movie to getting a dvd5 movie. Why would I want a mkv wrapped movie when I can burn a playable .ISO on my ps3 or blu ray player. Granted some people stream movies to their hi def T.V.’s or have a HTPC that has a nice fat hdd in it to store hundreds or mkv’s. For me I’ll keep sticking to bd5’s or bd9’s.

    ‘Nuff said.

  36. kris
    June 15th, 2008 | 03:41

    @38

    MKV HD movies come in various sizes, because the scene group that encoded them set the aspect ratio so that it is the same as the director intended (eg 2.35). When a film is mastered to blu-ray, it is scaled to fit inside a 1280×720 pixel frame. If the AR is 2.35, this means there is extra space at the top at bottom of the image, which results in black bars being added to pad it out to 1280×720.
    Now tell me, what is the point of using extra space encoding black horizontal bars WHEN NO VIDEO INFORMATION IS STORED IN THEM. The logical thing to do is crop it to the true aspect ratio. If you DVD/BD player is too sh!t to deal with this, just hook up your tv to your computer.
    I dont see people complaining about AVI files that are not 1.78 AR, and seeing as even 700mb/1400mb scene AVI’s are almost identical to DVD’s, what is the point of getting a 4.3gb rip? Waste of space and bandwidth.
    Scene always have cropped and always will. Go complain somewhere else.

    If I’m not mistaken, don’t the black bars require a negligible amount of data to store considering they don’t ever change and are basically a large block of one colour that can be compressed by any decent algorithm into half a dozen bytes? If that is the case, why are people complaining about the borders?
