Despite the fact that in 2008 this Bond movie celebrated its 45 year anniversary, just like fine wine it ages to become better. After a quick pit-stop in Roger Moore’s era we’re back in the land of original and still stubborn Sir Sean. Guys and gals, please bear in mind the fact that this has been remastered in HD, not filmed in it so don’t expect perfection, but, having taken a quick peek, I can safely say that the treatment it got is nothing short of exemplary…

Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film’s dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. From Russia with Love is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming.

True, at that time high quality analog cameras are used.
But they have another problems, noise, colors and so on.
All the 007 movies have been digitally restored for Bluray. The restoration process scans the original film at 4k resolution, that’s roughly twice the 1920×1080 resolution we get at Full HD. The 4K master is then digitally cleaned to remove scratches and noise. If the print has faded then color correction can also be applied. What cannot be altered is the authentic look of the old film stock (thankfully!).

6720MB for a 720p rip? Come on!!! I call that overkill. DVD5-size is good enough for HD remasters, and it’s more practical for keeping, not to mention 50% more DL time. Sheesh!
@8: I think this time it is justified because the aspect ratio is 1.66…besides, the new audio transfer is only available in DTS so using the old AC3 sound would not have worked well.
To be able to watch a proper 720p movie – what do I need? Obviously 6720MB won’t fit an ordinary 4.7gig DVD. I have Sony Player capable of upscale to HD with HDMI interface.

Why are some rips bigger than 4.7GB? The reason is simple. The x264 encoder is used to identify the required size of the rip, in order to maintain decent picture quality. Older films suffer from issues like massive picture noise, possibly forcing a greater data rate to maintain quality. Conversely, most cartoons are good enough at 1/2 DVD size, because they contain little motion (especially in the backgrounds) and excellent picture quality.

This movie is only remastered into HD its not really that good, sound is a bit hollow and the picture is a bit scratchy, but not to bad for something made over 40 years ago.
The best Bond film of the lot. Would either put Goldfinger or Casino Royale (2006) behind it. Well worth the d/l if you haven’t seen it before and like Bond.

Just checked out moviex, not a very good website for me, I only saw torrents and never found gears of war.
I’ve always had the highest regard for Robert Shaw’s villian in this film,he’s got to be the best Bond baddy.
And the way Bond deduces he’s an agent at the end,priceless!
